Ceramic wine racks, in which the bottles lie in precast tubes, cylinders, clay pipes, or bins, offer a distinctive appearance and feel. They also contribute a small amount of thermal mass to protect the wine from heat, and they reduce the amount of light and vibration the bottles receive.
Ceramic racks, however, are massive and less forgiving than wood or metal. Allow for their extra weight and take care when you stock them, as bottles can break more easily and you can scratch their labels against the hard surfaces.
