Q: Is it better to build my own bar or buy a ready-made one?
A: The answer really depends on your lifestyle, budget, time and most important, home improvement skills. See our article (LINK TO HOME BAR OPTIONS) for some considerations and an overview of the many home bar options available.
Q: How much beer is in a keg?
A: It depends on where you buy it. A 1/2 keg is the largest available, holding 58.6 litres or 15.5 gallons, which is equivalent to about seven cases of beer. A 1/4 keg holds 7.75 gallons of beer or 3 1/2 cases of beer. A beer ball holds 5 gallons of beer which is equal to 2 1/4 cases of beer. There are some 5 gallon mini-kegs (1/6 barrels) now available. Sizes vary slightly by brand (domestic vs. imported), availability varies by province and state.
Q: How long does draft beer stay fresh?
A: Once you’ve started the keg, draft beer should be consumed within two to three weeks, and must be kept refrigerated (preferably between 38 and 40 degrees F) at all times.
Q: Why is my draft coming out too foamy?
A: It could be a warm keg, or an unsettled one (let a keg settle for at least two hours before tapping it). You might also have problems with your beer lines—if they’re too long or too exposed that can cause headaches. Check out KegWorks’ troubleshooting list for more information.
Q: Can I construct my home bar on a covered patio?
A: In warmer regions you can typically build your home bar outside—provided you adapt your building materials accordingly. You’ll need to use moisture- and insect-resistant wood as well as rust-resistant metals. It’s best to check with the manufacturer of your bar plans or your contractor first. |
